Citation | Hughes, Edward David (London). Lecturer in Chemistry, University College, London. Distinguished for his researches in the mechanism and kinetics of organic reactions in solution, particularly in relation to sub-stitution and elimination. Discovered and took prominent part in the establishment of unimolecular substitution and elimination and in many extension of these basic observtions to allied organic reactions and to specialized kinetic phenomena such as the distinctive ionic strength and common ion effects in ionic substitutions in aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. Noteworthy also is his work on the clarification of the Walden Inversion by kinetic methods and by the use of radioactive indicators. A list of papers is attached. |
