Citation | Martin, Leslie Harold (Melbourne). Associate Professor of Natural Philosophy, University of Melbourne. Distinguished for his work on X-rays, heat, and training research physicists in Australia. His work includes a pioneer study of the efficiency of production of fluorescent X-rays, the measurements of absorption coefficients, and satisfactory comparison of the intensities of X-rays of different wavelength. Using the expansion chamber, the quantum theory of the distribution of X-ray photoelectrons was confirmed, and the relativity theory of the Auger effect studied. Work in nuclear physics includes a study of the beta-ray spectrum of radium E. In heat, with Kannuluik, he has given a theory and measured the thermal conductivity of poorly conducting powders, and made precision determination of conductivities of gases. He has taken a considerable share in training research students, and the investigation of problems for the Australian Govenment, including matters realting to the war. |
