DescriptionAn account of the selection of a site for the Magnetic Observatory at Madras [Chennai], 'a spot of wate ground attached to a Government Building called "The College"...'. Ludlow describes the building, its axis, and the selection of magnets for its use. Ludlow describes the testing of magnetometers, and the locating of meteorological instruments, notably a barometer, thermometers and an anemometer.

Signed [p.17]: 'S.O.E. Ludlow Supt. Magc. Observy. Madras'. There is a pencil note signed by Edward Sabine [p.15], indicating that defects in the anemometer were 'communicated to Mr. Newman June 25 41'.
