Description | Informs of news received by the Kew Observatory of a Bill that is to be introduced to Parliament by the London United Tramways Company enabling them to consruct an electric tramway in the vicinity of the Observatory, with plans for a line running from Hammersmith to Kew Bridge, with branches to both Richmond and Hounslow, encolsing the Deer Park and the Observatory.
The Observatory Committee feel that unless adequate precautions are taken the proposed work will ruin the endeavours of the Kew Observatory. Warns that electric trams will cause distrubance comparable with the diurnal variation of the vertical component of the Earth's magentic force. Informs the Observatory Committee have created a sub-committee for the purpose of protecting the work of the observatory. Argues that the Observatory's position on Crown land should mean it will be granted assistance from the Office of Works and the Treasury, and invites the Royal Society to offer their support in protecting the Observatory. |
