TitleLetter from [Sir Richard] Strachey, Chairman of the Meteorological Council, Meteorological Office, 63, Victoria Street, London, to Professor [Arthur William] Rücker, Secretary of The Royal Society
CreatorStrachey; Sir; Richard (1817 - 1908)
Date27 June 1899
DescriptionApplying on behalf of the Meteorological Society for a grant to enable Mr CJK Wilson to continue his research of atmospheric electricity. Informs Wilson began research in 1898 and the grant issued was £200 (from RS) as payment for one year but will be exhausted by next October. As result of the research, the Council has already communicated to The Royal Society an important paper by Wilson on the Condensation of Moisture upon positively and negatively charged ions. Wilson is engaged in observing the variation of electrical potential in the open air with the view of determining what the carriers of electrification in the air and the contributing explanation of the variations of potential indicated on the self recording apparatus at Kew and elsewhere.

Communicates that Wilson's esearch project will not be completed by October, expressing the council's eagerness to have the work continue as it shows promise of yielding valuable results. However, the Meteorological Office's current financial situation is constrained. Therefore, they are proposing to seek additional funding from The Royal Society to extend Mr. Wilson's services until the end of the second year from October 1898.

Informs there will be a funding gap during the period between October and the decision from The Royal Society regarding the additional grant. The Council believes Wilson's work is important enough to justify their request for a £100 contribution from the remaining balance of the Government Grant fund held by The Royal Society to cover the required remuneration. Requests for this application to be presented to the Society for consideration.
