TitleLetter from unknown sender, to The Royal Society
Datec.1840
DescriptionAttempted to ascertain, on direction of the Committee, the means available for determining the state of Dr Knerr's[?] invariable pendulum and obtain further information. The pendulum is of Kater's institution and was transferred from the RS to Dr Knerr/Knorr[?] several months ago. Informs that without it, Mr Sabine cannot undertake the experiment which is required to be completed before the end of the present month. Details proposed spaces, including a magazine in Woolwich; The Royal Observatory; Captain Foster's shed; the Astronomer Royal's miscellaneous stores; the basement below the departments of The Royal Society & Royal Astronomical Society, in which to place the pendulum but finds they all have considearble disadvantages. Concludes by adding that if anyone feels the inclination to undertake the experiment, that besides the iron basket at the Royal Observatory there is a diaphram, unattached, in the magazine at Woolwich.
