Title | Letter from Francis Mowatt, Treasury Chambers, to [Joseph Lister] President of the Royal Society |
Creator | Mowatt, Sir; Francis (1837-1919); civil servant |
Date | 27 October 1897 |
Description | Informs, on behalf of the Lord Commissioners of the Treasury, that they are willing to ask Parliament to provide funds required to enable the country to join The International Geodetic Association.
Explains that inclusion in the International Geodetic Association is a ten-year commitment, and that a new ten-year term is about to begin; it states that a delegate must be nominated to represent both the permanent International Geodetic Bureau, and a delegate for each of the triennial conferences. Provides an overview of the annual subscription terms, inlcuding costs and expenses. Requests for the Royal Society to give recommendations for the permanent Bureau delegate, as well as conference delegates when the time arises.
Stipulates that the proposed fund for this endeavour must be towards general scientific or practical purposes and will append this condition to the notification of adherence. Concludes by informing the RS of the course of action in response to the letter, namely that it will ask the Foreign Affairs minister to respond to the German government, who sent the initial request. |
