Description | Commencing 'I have been much interested in the Review of Whewell's Philosophy commonly attributed to you...'. On induction and the anonymous author's 'little treatise' upon which he is engaged and from which he quotes. He writes that if Herschel is interested in the subject, a letter should be sent to the address given. He states a problem in reasoning [from his proposed work?] and concludes by stating what his work is intended to achieve, 'affording a system of geometry of perfect demonstration, from which I would even banish all ex absurdo proofs'.
With a later OHMS envelope [postmarked Birmingham 1854] addressed to Sir John F.W. Herschel Bart., Master & Worker, Her Majesty's Mint, London. Initially used to store 'Notes Heads & Memoranda respecting my own Publications', according to an inscription in Herschel's hand. Later re-used for this, 'a nonscientififc article written anonymously'. |
