| Description | Sabine delighted to hear Lloyd will carry out geomagnetic determinations in Ireland and tells Lloyd of a way to obtain reliable needles for the work. It is the same plan which [Christopher] Hansteen and [Alexander Von] Humboldt had followed prior to their own magnetic work. Sabine advises Lloyd to establish a base station in Dublin to serve as standard point of reference for other observations and encourages Lloyd to interchange needles with Hansteen, in Christiania [Oslo] for comparison. Hansteen's needles travel through the Foreign Office via Hamburg free of cost, thanks to the help of Lord Palmerston. Sabine elaborates on best method for magnetic survey work. Sabine mathematically describes his formula (as corrected by Hansteen and [Friedrich Benjamin von] Lütke) by which Lloyd can calculate the intensity of earth's magnetic field in Ireland, and outlines best practice for observing and recording results. Sabine is willing to take part in Lloyd's work should he ask. Briefly mentions that Lloyd's last paper on conical refraction has gone astray and asks Lloyd to send a copy through Dr Pitcairn. |
