TitleLetter from Edward Sabine, Tortington to Humphrey Lloyd
Date16 March 1839
DescriptionThe polar expedition which Sabine and others have been lobbying for is now ordered, with [James Clark] Ross placed in command of the ships 'Erebus' and 'Terror'. The scheme for the fixed observatories will be similarly authorised soon, Sabine believes, and should be announced at the Council of the Royal Society next Thursday, 21st March 1839.

Instruments need to be ordered and made and Sabine discusses which artists might be best for this. Mentions [Thomas Charles] Robinson, [Thomas] Grubb and Jones. Further plans necessary to the magnetic scheme's organisation are brought up by Sabine. [John] Herschel wishes for Sabine to contact Sir Hussey Vivian [Master-General of the Ordnance] about employing officers of the Artillery or Engineers as observatory staff.

Further discussion of the report of the British magnetic survey.
