| Description | A letter which describes James Clark Ross as 'King of the Antarctic regions'. Sabine informs Lloyd of the over zealous system of observing adopted at the Van Diemen's Land [Tasmania; Lutruwita or Truwana] observatory, as well as the proposal to employ a fourth Non-Commissioned Officer at each of the Ordnance observatories.
Sabine bemoans the fact that no one supported his call for establishing an observatory at Woolwich in the summer of 1840. Sabine implies that it would have saved both he and Lloyd a lot of trouble and given them official recognition as heads of the British magnetic scheme.
Letters have been received from Frederick Marow Eardley-Wilmot (director of the Cape of Good Hope magnetic observatory) regarding the possibility of a magnetic survey in Africa [letters not included]. |
