Description | Elliot compares the portable instrument to the fixed instruments, discussing the differences at Singapore observatory. Discussion on the East India Company’s work. Elliot notes that they are at a disadvantage in comparison to the officers of the East India Company who are immediately under the orders of [Edward] Sabine.
Elliot discusses the abstracts sent by him.
Elliot informs Lloyd that he has not heard from Captain [John Theophilus] Boileau, and [John] Caldecott for six months, [Samuel Owen Edgar] Ludlow has not written to Elliot in two years, and letters written to [Edward] Sabine were unanswered. Therefore, he would appreciate Lloyd’s advice and guidance.
Elliot describes employing four assistants and the work that they do, the observations they make. Discussion on the total intensity, and comparisons to the horizontal intensity. The declination is decreasing, and the vertical is decreasing rapidly during the last three months. When the first assistant was on duty at midnight the horizontal force increasing.
Elliot describes conducting experiments with the magnets and changing the poles of the dipping needles.
Elliot has used the same thread in the declination for the last six months, and discusses the results he has achieved.
