| Title | Letter from Charles James Buchanan Riddell, Maidstone to Humphrey Lloyd, Trinity College, Dublin |
| Date | 20 March 1841 |
| Description | Riddell informs Lloyd of his return to England. Riddell informs Lloyd that he has not taken any observations for some time before his departure and is confident in [Charles] Younghusband’s capabilities to conduct the observations at Toronto. Riddell has brought with him a large collection of returns, which he will send to Lloyd in a few days.
Riddell saw Mr [William Cranch] Bond and Professor Lovering in Boston, and their [Harvard observatory] is now built, with the instruments in adjustment. Lieutenant [James Melville] Gilliss [naval] officer in charge [and founder] of the astronomical observatory at Washington [United States Naval Observatory] offers to cooperate. [Edward] Sabine informed Riddell of Captain [James Clark] Ross’s observations at Kerguelen Land. |
