| Description | Lloyd replies to questions previously asked by Riddell, and notes that Riddell is clearing off his magnetic work. Discussion on the limit of distance for deflection in temperature experiments, Lloyd provides his reason for considering the distance should not be within a certain limit. Lloyd discusses the errors of observations at large and moderate distances.
Lloyd agrees with Riddell’s suggestion regarding the experimental method of determining the effect of the earth’s inducing force upon the moment of the deflecting magnet. The axis of the deflecting magnet directed to the centre of the bifilar bar is correct.
Lloyd asks Riddell whether there is a limit of time to the admission to or preparation for the corps of artillery or engineers. Lloyd is enquiring on behalf of Mrs Lloyd’s brother who has recently finished university. Lloyd describes his brother-in-law as being a classical scholar with some mathematical knowledge. As Lloyd is unfamiliar with the procedures of the admiralty, he was wondering if his brother-in-law could be admitted at all into a department suited to his qualification, after being tested by examination. Lloyd praises his brother-in-law. Lloyd himself wanted to join the corps of engineers, however was steered in another direction by his father. |
