Creator | Pengelly; William (1812-1894); geologist |

Description | Monthly report of the superintendents of exploration. Excavations of the southern portion of the grand central chamber in the eastern series of galleries and chambers are almost complete. A stalagmite cake is found at the eastern wall, a sectional sketch of the floor layers at the same location is included. It is determined 'all the objects found in the black mould immediately beneath, are older than the cake itself, and have not been disturbed by man, or by small animals as may have occupied or visited the Cavern'. Finds from beneath the cake include: bones, 'one of which was cut with a tool', pottery, two fragments of a bone comb, an almost perfect bone comb' with ornamentation, and a spindle whorl - a drawing showing form and size of the comb (1) and the whorl (2) supplied. Other finds separate to the cake include: copper smelt, and part of a human jaw with two teeth. Vivian is from home. |
