Description | Monthly report of the superintendents of exploration. The excavation of the great central eastern chamber was completed on 8th July [1867]. Work has started on a smaller chamber opening out from the southern side of this: it is named the 'Lecture Hall', following twenty years of Mr. Vivian conducting lectures on the Cavern in it. Came across a section previously examined by Mr McEnery - the floor was broken up, but the deposit remained. Previous explorers did not 'secure all the fossils' as more was found in this excavation, even in the disturbed ground - 'indeed, the largest molar of the mammoth which we have found in the cavern' was found in the previously explored ground. Though, no chronological value can be ascertained as they are mixed with modern objects. |
