TitleSixty-first report of progress of excavations by William Pengelly and Edward Vivian, Torquay, to the British Association Kent's Cavern Committee
CreatorPengelly; William (1812-1894); geologist
Vivian; Edward (1808–1893); science writer; poet
Date11 January 1871
DescriptionMonthly report of the superintendents of excavation. On 30 December, all excavation was completed for all areas of Smerdon's Gallery inclusive of the small lateral branches that came off of the gallery. The excavation was troublesome due to the undervaulting nature of the passages and there was a large number of animal remains discovered therein. A reference was made to a previous report [No. 59] wherein stated they believed one of the passages would likely lead to an external entrance to the gallery - this was discovered within one of the smaller lateral passages, which ended with an opening onto the Cavern's hillside. This has been declared the fourth entrance.
