Title | Letter from Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt to Thomas Young, dated at Paris |
Date | 13 June 1823 |
Description | Autograph letter discussing Young's publication on hieroglyphs and Egypt ["An Account of some recent discoveries in hieroglyphical literature, and Egyptian antiquities", 1823] which was addressed to von Humboldt in preface. [Friedrich August Wilhelm] Spohn is awaiting for Raoul Rochette (superintendent of antiquities at the Bibliothèque nationale de France) to copy the Casati papyri which Young has already partially deciphered. Champollion's volume should be published very soon. [Antoine Isaac Silvestre] de Sacy will announce Young's publication in the Journal des Savans. Announces that [Pierre Simon de] Laplace doesn't have long to live. von Humboldt's brother [Wilhelm von Humboldt] is following Young's work closely and still immersed in the study of Sanskrit and has recently published a treatise on grammatical forms of Greek and Hindi in [August Wilhelm von] Schlegel's Indische Bibliothek. First addressed to Young at the Royal Society but readdressed to Welbeck street. |
