Forwarding at last the article on refraction intended for publication in Encyclopedia Britannica. Arago had intended for it to be handed personally to Young but the personne in charge of doing so was called on an unexpected trip to Brussels.
Arago had hoped to hand it by 29 May but his time was occupied by the publication of the Connaissance des Temps and the Annuaire on behalf of the Bureau des longitudes. Arago is off to Metz again, but during the 15 days trip will work on a paragraph on circular polarisation, dichroism and the history of the study of the phenomena. He will send the articles as they are written, but if the edition is finished before Arago, [McVey] Napier and Young can decide whether to proceed with publication with or without Arago's contributions. Everything will be send within 15 days unless he falls ill as the Bureau des Longitudes should not need his contributions.
As a postrscriptum, Arago finds very odd that [David] Brewster and [Jean-Baptiste] Biot are still supporting mobile polarisation in their latest publications that he thought it necessary to prouve it unfounded. If he has used too many details in his demonstration, he hopes that the creator of the doctrine of interference [Young], won't mind. |
