TitleLetter from Pieter Adrian Bergsma, Utrecht to Edward Sabine
Date11 December 1859
DescriptionBergsma apologises for not replying to Sabine sooner as he was in Germany. Sabine promised to send Bergsma the Prince Consorts introductory address pat the British Association]. Bergsma discusses the magnetical instruments he has ordered from Mr Adie. Bergsma has asked Mr Adie to send him a description of the instruments in order to know how the combination of eye observation and photographic records is made. Bergsma thanks Sabine for the dip circle and unifilar ready for him at Kew, but thinks it better to keep two dip circles at the observatory. Discussion on proposed changes to the part of the dip circle supporting the needle. Discussion on the establishment of the [?] Island and Shanghai observatories, and magnetic surveys. Bergsma expresses his desire to conduct a survey of the Indian archipelago but fears the Dutch government is not interested in this part of the expedition, and therefore would like Sabine to ‘press upon’ the Dutch minister for colonial affairs, Mr [Jan Jacob] Rochussen, the importance of this.
