TitleLetter from Pieter Adrian Bergsma, Utrecht to Edward Sabine
Date26 January 1861
DescriptionBergsma thanks Sabine for disciplines of the observations made at Kew observatory, and hopes that in a few years’ time the observations of the Java Observatory will also produce some results. Bergsma received the gimbal stand safely. Bergsma made a proposal about research made with the Fox circle, to a ‘Committee for promoting researches at sea’ (established at Rotterdam). Bergsma outlines his proposal and discusses observations made with the Fox circle on the voyage between Holland and Java. However, Bergsma proposal was rejected and one of the reasons being Sabine’s opinion that observations with he Fox circle can not be taken on board a merchant ship, rather an expressly fitted ship was required for this purpose. Bergsma discusses the disadvantages of using a ship specifically designed for carrying out magnetic observations at sea. Bergsma is still waiting on the ‘slowest of the German and Dutch instrument makers’.
