TitleLetter from Pieter Adrian Bergsma, Batavia [Jakarta, Indonesia] to Edward Sabine
Date8 October 1873
DescriptionBergsma informs Sabine that the two copies of the first volume of observations made at the magnetical and meteorological [observatory] in Batavia [colonial name of the capital of the Dutch East Indies, now Jakarta, Indonesia] sent nearly two years ago, have not reached Sabine. Due to Sabine’s address changing the volumes did not reach him, therefore Bergsma is sending another copy of the volume, along with copies of the first two letters to show that he was not neglectful towards Sabine.

Bergsma has not yet succeeded in getting permission from the government to build an observatory, therefore continues to use his imperfect system to make observations ‘without the least scientific assistance’. During nearly eight years Bergsma has made hourly observations with his ‘Javanese’ assistants. Bergsma continues to propose plans for an observatory however meets resistance from the government on account of the expense it would take. However, Bergsma has confidence his last plan submitted a few months ago, will be approved. If approved the observatory will be ready to begin work on the magnetic survey of the archipelago in 1877.

Dr [Elie van Rijckevorsel] intends to make absolute magnetical observations in Indonesia without a central station.
