TitleLetter from William Radcliffe Birt, Kew Observatory to Edward Sabine
Date5 June 1850
DescriptionBirt informs Sabine that he is suffering from a severe attack of nervous debility due to his early duties as specified by Dr Chapman’s certificate [see MS/257/1/178].

Dr Chapman suggests Birt to leave the house ‘immediately’ for a change of air. Birt notes that as the [Kew] Committee will be making its arrangements, he thinks he should mention his unwillingness to undertake his duties at the observatory under the present arrangements. Birt discusses the confidence of the committee in him, but remarks on circumstances in which it would be better to terminate his engagement at the end of the 12 months. Birt remarks on his meteorological and electrical observations.
