TitleLetter from Viscount Adare, Paris to Edward Sabine
Date24 December 1835
DescriptionAdare thanks Sabine for his letter detailing his travels to Valentia, remark on seeing [Alexander von Humboldt] in Paris, and describes his conversation with Humboldt regarding magnetism. Adare discusses Humboldt’s opposition to the four poles, and mentions that his conversation was not as agreeable as expected. [Jean-Baptiste] Biot has arrived for the winter. Adare expresses his wish for more time with Humboldt and to get something more ‘satisfactory’ about magnetism, but he was anxious of not taking up too much time. Humboldt recommended that Adare should visit Captain [Louis Isidore] Duperrey and procure a magnetic chart similar to his.

Adare has seen Basil Hall and gives a favourable opinion of Hall. Reference to collections of fossils and shells, lectures on geology. Remarks on the ‘scientific men’ here. Adare asks about results and observations at Valentia.
