TitleLetter from Guilherme Schüch de Capanema, Rio de Janeiro to Edward Sabine
Date23 September 1861
DescriptionCapanema thanks Sabine for his letter, and has received several papers of Sabine’s work on terrestrial magnetism. Refers to experiments in the interior of Brazil and on different stations under the equator. Capanema expresses his desire to set up a magnetical observatory [in Brazil], and describes the difficulties he has already faced regarding this. Capanema notes his ‘countrymen’ are not accustomed to such scientific endeavours and therefore do not place value to them, the government take little interest as well. Capanema has begun publishing a series of articles on the subject to show the practical results and benefits of a magnetic observatory.

Capanema describes his ‘misfortune’ at losing two years of work by shipwreck. Work included registers of meteorological hygrometers, astronomical observations with geologies, four volumes with photographs of interest to geologists, botanists, and ethnographers.
