TitleIncomplete letter from Ralph Copeland to Edward Sabine
Date[19th century]
Description[The beginning of this letter is missing.]

Discusses his plans for carrying out a polar expedition. Copeland asks Sabine if Captain Young would be the ‘likely man’, and if Sir Leopold [Francis] McClintock would provide them with his advice. Informs Sabine that he is happy to take responsibility of the astronomical observations if Lord Rosse [William Parsons] accepts his temporary of definite resignation. Refers to ‘debating ways and means’ with [Carl Christian] Koldewey and [Karl Nikolai Jensen] Börgen at Göttingen Observatory in 1869. Reference to the second German north polar expedition. Copeland suggests selecting men from the crews of the ‘Germania’ and ‘Hansa’ [vessels used in the second German north polar expedition]. Copeland has not yet discussed his plans with Lord Rosse, therefore they need to remain private until he does so. Discussion on setting up a committee for this expedition with Sabine at the helm, and instruments needed.
