| Description | Ballot informs Sabine that the King of Netherlands has established a meteorological institution in Utrecht, where observations made in Holland, the Dutch colonies in the Indies, America, and Africa will be collected there, and discussed by Mr [Frederik Wilhelm Christiaan] Krecke, Director of the observatory. Observations made on warships and merchant ships will also be collected at the Observatory and discussed according to the plan proposed at the maritime conference held in Brussels [the first international maritime conference held for devising a uniform system of meteorological observations at sea] in 1853. Mr [Marin Henri] Jansen will be responsible for this endeavour.
Ballot hopes that the meteorologists will hold a similar conference in order to establish a uniform plan in conjunction with the plan adopted at the maritime conference. Therefore, all observations around the world will be comparable with each other.
Ballot expresses the importance of the meteorological work being conducted in England. |
