TitleLetter from Christopher Henyk Diderich Buys Ballot, Utrecht to Edward Sabine
Date1 October 1855
DescriptionBallot refers to Sabine possibly being too busy to reply to this letter on account of the [Crimean War] which is now showing signs of ‘desired success’.

Ballot was unable to respond to a letter from the Royal Society from July 1854 due to various difficulties with an officer of the Dutch Navy. The Royal Society, the Lord Commissioner for the trade department and Sabine have been sent the ‘crossings’ of the Dutch merchant men in the route from Utrecht to Java. Tables and three sheets of wind and current charts will be given out in the method of Mr [Matthew Fontaine] Maury. Ballot will accumulate the temperature of the sea and air contained within the journals. Ballot thanks Sabine for his various papers. The annals of 1855 include observations from Batavia [colonial name of the capital of the Dutch East Indies, now Jakarta, Indonesia], Dejima in Japan, and other localities in Java. Reference to meteorological observations from British India. Ballot discusses Sabine’s question regarding the magnetical determinations of Captain Klein.
