| Description | The Royal Academy [at Amsterdam] agrees with Ballot’s views regarding plans for magnetic and meteorological observations in Java, Sumatra, Borneo, [Sulawesi, colonial name Celebes], Timor and other stations. Ballot was not in doubt of this decision but was unsure of the ‘rapport’. Ballot does not yet have authorisation to procure instruments. However, at his own responsibility Ballot asks Sabine to order one set of survey instruments at £83, and one set of differential instruments for a fixed observatory at £100. Allot discusses the importance of the theodolite and asks Sabine’s opinion regarding this.
Ballot suggests the Director of the observatory at Java could meet with Sabine in Holland is Sabine is busy with surveying work, and could return with him to London and stay a fortnight.
