Title | Letter from Charles Robert Darwin, Down, Farnborough Kent to James Clark Ross |
Date | 31 December 1847 |
Description | Darwin asks Ross to collect species of Cirripedia or barnacles during his expedition [reference to the search for John Franklin’s lost expedition], noting the latitude under which they were found and a description of the coast rocks. For the next two years Darwin will be working on a monograph on Cirripedia therefore the specimens will be most useful. Darwin remarks on the noble objective of Ross’s expedition and acknowledges that he may not have opportunity to collect specimens, however barnacles are easily ‘scraped of the rocks and put into spirits’. Darwin wishes Ross luck on his voyage. |
