Discusses the next exchange of packages. Refers to volume of the US astronomical expedition. Hilgard has read with interest Sabine’s contribution to ‘terrestrial and celestial magnetism’. Update regarding the progress of studying the ‘peculiarities of the climate’ and ‘the general laws of the changes of the atmosphere’. Discussion regarding the observations of storms. Henry discusses their system of telegraphing the weather. Discusses some ‘ethnographical views connected with the present unhappy condition’ of the [United States of America]. Refers to the ‘fratricidal wars’ which have impoverished the country [reference to the American civil war]. Hilgard remarks on the President of the United States [of America] to call on more soldiers and money to continue the war. Remarks ‘we have got rid of [Matthew Fontaine] Maury’ [referring to Maury joining the Confederacy States Navy during the American civil war]. |
