Title | Letter from John Frederick William Herschel, Collingwood to Lord Northampton |
Date | 27 October 1848 |
Description | Herschel expresses regret to learn that the Admiralty has given the whole sum of £500 to Mr [Charles] Brooke for his photographic [invention], ‘without any reference having been made to the societies with whom the recommendation originated’. Herschel believes Mr [Francis] Ronalds methods and solution to the problem are as ‘complete and satisfactory’ as Brooke’s. Herschel will support Northampton in his course to place before the Admiralty Ronalds claims. In Herschel’s opinion it would have been advisable to divide the £500 between Brooke and Ronalds. |
