Title | Letter from Otto Torell, Lund to Edward Sabine |
Date | 24 November 1864 |
Description | Torell apologises to Sabine for not being able to provide a report of Professor [Adolf Erik] Nordenskiöld and [Nils Christoffer] Dunér’s arctic explorations this year, the purpose of which was to complete the survey of the south part of Spitzbergen, and to investigate the possibility of the measurement of an arc of meridian. Dunér is now ready to give Torell an abstract of the expedition. Torell informs Sabine that the expedition was a complete success, and Sabine’s suggested plan in 1825 worked ‘perfectly’. Refers to the network of triangulation, measurement of the arc, land between Hinlopen Strait and ? water. Torell hopes Sabine will feel ‘pleased’ to have ‘laid the first and most important stone to this scientific work’. Torell is confident the Swedish government will take the necessary measures to the measure the arc. |
