| Description | Hudson has discussed Talbot's enquiry about a printed mathematical paper with [John George] Children. Children could not receive anything other than a unique manuscript paper for reading at the Royal Society, with a view to publication in the Philosophical Transactions. Some months ago, the President directed the Foreign Secretary to translate an abstract of Professor [Johann Carl Friedrich] Gauss's paper on terrestrial magnetism to be printed in the Proceedings. This had been read at the Royal Society of Gottingen. The President considered the paper to be of great interest to philosphers in Britain and it was unlikely to be published for some considerable time. Publication in the Philosophical Transactions was never contemplated, however. |
