| Title | Copy letter, John George Children, Secretary of the Royal Society, to Dr [William] Ritchie |
| Date | 5 July 1833 |
| Description | Before a decision is made on the printing of Ritchie's paper in the Philosophical Transactions ['Experimental researches into electro-magnetism and magneto electricity'] the committee had queries. Was Ritchie aware of Hippolyte Pixii's experiments in decomposition of water and [Francis] Watkins' method of making permanent magnets of hardened steel using electro-magnets? Several members of Council have witnessed the method used by Watkins and have no reason to doubt his work. Watkins has informed Children that this is how his most powerful magnets are produced. |
