TitleCopy letter, JWL [John William Lubbock], Rl Socy [Royal Society], to M [Jean Elias Banjamin] Valz, Nimes, France
CreatorLubbock; Sir John William; third baronet (1803-1865); British astronomer and banker
RecipientValz; Jean Elias Benjamin (1787-1867); French astronomer
Date8 June 1835
DescriptionLubbock has communicated the contents of Valz's letter to Mr Stratford but he has not answered. He hopes that Valz has received a new edition of his treatise on the orbit of comets and about the Moon. He gives details of how Valz may obtain copies of the Astronomical Society's proceedings. Herschel has suggested that the atoms of which a comet is composed may not aggregate and may describe separate orbits, which Lubbock considers to be specious. Barker's tract is rare but might be obtained from Bailliere. He will enquire via Dr [Stephen Peter] Rigaud. Mr [Francis] Baily is publishing a catalogue of [John] Flamsteed's stars from his original manuscript, an importrant service to sidereal astronomy.
