Title | Copy letter, JWL [John William Lubbock], RS [Royal Society], to the Chancellor of the Exchequer [Thomas Spring Rice] |
Creator | Lubbock; Sir John William; third baronet (1803-1865); British astronomer and banker |
Recipient | Rice; Thomas Spring; first Baron Monteagle of Brandon (1790-1866); British politician |
Date | 12 August 1839 |
Description | It will be necessary for the officers proceeding to Canada, St Helena and the Cape should take with them instructions to officers commanding the Royal Engineers at those stations, to provide the appropriate buildings for their observations. He describes their construction and dimensions. If no suitable building is available, a certificate might be issued covering matters of building erection and expenses. It has been accepted by Government that three years' continuous and simultaneous observations would be essential. To save expense and not delay observations, it would be desirable that the Treasury authorised the construction of buildings. The Royal Society is also anxious that one other non-commissioned officer should be appointed to each of the three magnetic observatories, under the Ordnance Department, to increase efficiency. |
