TitleDraft instructions to the Commander of the Antarctic Expedition and the Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff
Date[February 1901]
DescriptionInstructions covering the main objectives of the expedition and the various scientific observations the Commander is tasked with overseeing. These instructions state that a small landing party should be left in the care of Professor [John Walter] Gregory, while the ship continues surveying at sea. Also contains the instructions to the scientific director, detailing the men under his command, some of the key research goals, and details of the ownership of the research following the completion of the expedition. With various manuscript corrections in both red and black ink. Those in red "are those proposed by the Sub Committee" [though it does not clearly state which one]. Kempe's name has been written on the first page.

NotesThe dating is unclear. Unlike other instances of the instructions, these refer to 'Her late Majesty's Government' rather than 'His Majesty's Government', which suggests this is an earlier draft than MS/547/12/2. The manuscript corrections reflect some of the amendments discussed at the Joint Antarctic Committee meeting on 8 February [See MS/547/12/3 and MS/547/12/4].
