Shackleton received notice of his appointment on the expedition on 23 January 1901, which was approved by the Commander of the Expedition [Robert Falcon Scott], the Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff [at the time John Walter Gregory], the President of the Royal Geographical Society [Clements Markham], and the President of the Royal Society [William Huggins]. Shackleton was passed by the Admiralty doctor and subsequently resigned his position at the Solar Physics Observatory. He heard nothing further about the appointment until recieving Captain Scott's letter of 22 July, which stated that he was unable to recommend his appointment due to the condition of his teeth. Shackleton wishes to know how he will be compensated for the loss of his position, as well as money already spent in preparation of joining the Expedition. |
