Title | Letter from J W [John Walter] Gregory, Bassetts, Little Baddow, Chelmsford, to A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Gregory; John Walter (1864-1932); British Geologist; Explorer |
Recipient | Kempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922) |
Date | 11 February 1901 |
Description | Discusses whether signing articles will be necessary as 'pleasure' yachts are exempt from regulations governing agreements with the crew. Gregory understands exploring ships usually sail as yachts, and expects the 'Discovery' to do so 'in order to avoid various dues'. Wonders whether Sir Clements Markham has any legal authority to issue orders to the 'Discovery' in the name of its registered owner, which is the Royal Geographical Society. With an attached copy of several extracts from the Merchant Shipping Act. |
