| Description | Will discuss Kempe's letter with [Michael] Foster and take his advice. States that he regarded Sir Clements Markham's letters as official documents from the President of the Royal Geographical Society to the President of the Royal Society, especially because of Markham's refusal to sign the expedition 'Instructions'. Believes these letters also represent the views of the [Royal Geographical Society's] 'deputation', which includes Mr McClintock and Mr Broderick [in addition to Markham]. If the meeting between the Societies takes place, Huggins states that a signed statement must be produced. Wonders if further advances from the Treasury should be paused until this matter is settled. Also questions why the Joint Committee appointed [John Walter] Gregory if Markham is not happy about it. |
