| Description | Has received G [George] Murray's account of the new Committee and the current state of the expedition instructions. Murray has told him 'the meeting was a fight between yourself and the two Chartered Company members'. Notes the 'irony of the georaphical selection', particularly [Sir Leopald] McClintock's selection, as he initially wanted all scientific work to 'to be done by the ship's doctor and by two members of African Chartered Companies'. Gregory doesn't put any weight on the Companies' opinions on Antarctic matters, but their role on the new '"Judicial Committee"' at least showed Gregory that some prior issues had not been brought back up. In particular, Mackenzie seems to have forgiven Gregory for a report he wrote in 1893 at the request of 'the acting administration of British East Africa'. Markham has also sent him a design for the ship's flag, 'which consists apparently of a hog-maned donkey's head'. Gregory is grateful to Kempe for fighting to ensure the ship is suited for scientific work in the Antarctic, though still worries that 'even partial geographical success can only be purchased by the sacrifice of the scientific work'.
