Title | Letter from [William] Shackleton, 14 Bettridge Road, Parsons Green, to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Shackleton; William (1871-1921); physicist |
Date | 25 July 1901 |
Description | Has spoken with Professor [Arthur William] Rucker and [George Robert Milne] Murray regarding Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott's letter which stated Shackleton's services would not be required due his 'teeth being defective'. Encloses a copy of a certificate from the house surgeon of the Dental Hospital of London, showing the report about his teeth was exaggerated. He was passed by the Admiralty doctor, and also points out he was the first and only officer to dentally examined. Shackleton believes the reason given for his dismissal is hypocritical. Captain Scott claimed that Shackleton had made himself objectionable to the other officers, but he believes he is good friends with most of them, particularly [Thomas Vere] Hodgson, [Edward Adrian] Wilson, [Ernest Henry] Shackleton, [Hartley] Ferrar, [Reginald] Skelton and [Reginald] Koettlitz. He has had some difference of option with [Charles William Rawson] Royds and [Albert Borlase] Armitage over policy, but he is ready to work harmoniously for the sake of the expedition. |
