Title | Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 19 February 1902 |
Description | Markham states that they are placed in a difficult position with regard to Murray. He has sent Kempe extracts from [Robert Falcon] Scott's letter about Murray from the Cape. Scott has written again from Lythalton. Markham feels that the Royal Society officers should know the opinion of Scott and those on board concerning Murray's fitness for his post. Markham would like Sir Michael Foster to read the enclosed extract.
Considering Scott's letters, Markham finds communicating with Murray to be difficult and embarrassing: 'the idea of Murray going out in the second ship is quite out of the question'. The arrangement that Murray should edit the final results will need to be reconsidered, but the immediate concern is the disposal of the collections and reports that are on the point of arriving. |
