Title | Copy letter from [William] Colbeck, Christchurch, to Sir Clements Markham |
Creator | Colbeck; William (1871-1930); British Antarctic explorer |
Date | 28 March 1903 |
Description | Cabled the 'Discovery' report as instructed. [Robert Falcon] Scott hopes to reach Lyttelton this season. Present location is unsuitable and will seek new quarters if the ice doesn't break up. A relief ship next season will be 'imperative'. Tinned food supply on the 'Discovery' has been 'condemned', and supplies from 'Morning' now being consumed. Symptoms of scurvy noted during spring sledging but now cleared up, everyone on the 'Discovery' is 'in good health and spirits', though the doctor has advised Shackleton to return. Colbeck intends to remain until arrangements for supplies are complete, so supplies for both ships will be needed next season. |
