TitleCopy letter from L Darwin to Sir William Huggins
Date12 September 1903
DescriptionWritten from Cripp's Corner, Forest Row, Sussex
Marked 'Private'
States the fact that all their forces are scattered in Scotland, Cornwall and Norway led to some delay with regard to the joint letter to Scott. Sir Thomas Holditch ascertained that October 23rd was the last day for posting to Scott, and, on that, decided not himself to sign, there being no suffiicient reason to take it out of the President's hands. At the same time they received Sir Clement's draft, which he is posting to Huggins today. It is a very verbose document, but he thinks it would not require much modification to render it harmless. In the interests of the two Societies he still ventures to hope that a composite letter may be suggested; a letter containing the paragraph Huggins considers essential of his draft, and all the paragraphs he thinks harmless of Markham's. Whatever happens they are likely to have stormy times within the Royal Geographical Society Council!
