Description | Short accounts of five sledge journeys undertaken by Koettlitz and other members of the 'Discovery' expedition. The first expedition, which departed on 24 September 1902, to investigate rough old ice and rock debris north of Black and Brown Islands. The second, departing on 3 November, was a short trip to Erebus bay to ascertain if an Emperor penguin rookery was present there. The third account, dated 10 October, recounts the return journey of a smaller supporting party to the 'Discovery', having separated from a larger expedition. The fourth journey, which departed on 29 December, again went to study the ice and rock around Black and Brown Islands. The final account is dated 14 January 1903, describes an ascent of the '"Bluff"', to determine the pressure of the ice as it passes that point.
