Title | Copy letter from Captain R F [Robert Falcon] Scott, H M S Bulwark, Channel Fleet, Portland, to Sir Archibald Geikie, President of the Royal Society |
Creator | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Geikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924) |
Date | 23 November 1908 |
Description | Copy of letter [for the original, see MS/591/5/1].
Scott wishes to point out more examples of innacuracy in the published Meteorological Volume. The positions recorded for observations on sledge journeys are consistently innacurate. Scott points out his 1903 journey as a particular example, a trip on which [Reginald William] Skelton took the meteorological readings. The published report incorrectly interprets the group's movements, and Scott details several of these errors. 'These mistakes are not only calculated to confound the close students of these tables; the averages derived from them give a false idea of the weather conditions'.
Scott complains again about the reversal of the winds recorded by Lieutentant [Charles William Rawson] Royds on another sledging journey. The author has applied the wrong variation to the data, so even if his original argument [concerning true north versus magnetic north] was correct, the table is still ' wholly inaccurate'. Hopes that Geikie will expedite an investigation into these matters. |
