TitleLetter from G [Georges] Sagnac, 4 Rue Paillet, to [Joseph Larmor]
CreatorSagnac; Georges (1869-1928); French physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); British theoretical physicist
Date11 May 1899
DescriptionSagnac hastens to send Larmor a copy of the separate edition of his article on x-ray transformations from the Journal de Physique, a summary of huis main research. The detailed paper will follow in a few months, giving more comprehensive research on the same subject. He refers Larmor to the important question to ion theory in its relation to cathode rays raised in two articles by M. Villard in the January March 1899 issues of the Journal de Physique. In the latter, the author studies the reducing actions of cathode rays and their derivatives, showing that they are inseparable from cathodic phenomena and often coexist with the hydrogen spectrum. After discussion he concludes that questioning whether this means that all bodies might be formed from the same simple matter, which would be Crookes's radiant. In which case, Villard's hypothesis would not be necessary. On the other hand, his beautiful experiments, which are carried out with great care, should be treated with the utmost attention.
