TitleLetter from E H [Edward Hutchinson] Synge, Knockroe, Dundrum, Co Dublin, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorSynge; Edward Hutchinson (1890-1957); Irish physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date18 September 1923
DescriptionThe brown paper parcels of [William Rowan] Hamilton's notebooks are grimy and disordered and he suspects have not been opened since they were deposited in the library of Trinity College Dublin half a century ago. He describes the parcels and forwards some material relating to the manuscripts. He notes the outcome of Larmor's suggestion of a report by Rogers and McFadden, but he thinks the correct course would be for the Royal Irish Academy to transcribe the most important parts of the manuscripts. He believes transcription would cost £15 for the Dynamics of Light and as much again for the dynamical manuscripts. Transcripts might be sent to the French Academy, since Hamilton drew upon French sources. Synge will write to M. [Charles Émile] Picard with the suggestion that he compiles a report. He asks Larmor whether he thinks it worth spending £15 on the Dynamics of Light notebooks and Synge thinks that the larger notebook contains extensions of published work. If Larmor could write, Synge would read the letter to the Royal Irish Academy, as he did [Albert] Einstein's letter.
